Welcome to Tiponi

This is an information site about the therapy practice and treatment of Tiponi.

Psycho-education is important to us. Therefore  a lot of additional general information on eating disorders is to be found here as

well as personal experience with it.

The terms “eating disordered client”, “eating disordered patient” and “someone/ person with an eating disorder” are alternately used on this site. In the medical field one usually speaks of “patient” (like the general physician or in the hospital). When referring to psychotherapy the word “client” is more often used. For some, one name or the other has a negative ring to it. It is certainly not our intention to make people feel like a number of object. It is a rather sensitive subject and it is currently debated among professionals as to what the appropriate term must be. To us it makes no difference whether a “patient” or a “client” enters our therapy room. We always see a human being with a unique personality.

Tiponi is a music therapy practise, specialised in eating disorder treatment; Anorexia Nervosa (AN), Bulimia Nervosa (BN),  Binge Eating Disorder (BED), Orthorexia Nervosa (ON) and Eating disorder NOS (not otherwise specified). When applying for treatment, acceptance is not based on severity and duration of the eating disorder. People with a long term/ “chronic” eating disorder are as welcome as people who just found out they might be suffering from an eating disorder. People who for example binge and purge once in a couple of weeks, or engage in this many times daily are equally accepted. Treatment will be adapted to personal needs and situation. Last but not least, Tiponi also provides therapy and counselling for prevention of eating disorders and after-care.

Music therapy

Music therapy is a methodical form of therapy where musical means are applied within a therapeutic relationship towards change, development, stabilisation, or acceptation in areas of emotion, behaviour, cognition, social functioning and physical health. Therapy goals and a music therapy treatment plan are drawn up for each individual.

In music therapy a person can work on his/her own goals through music, with the help of the therapist. Multiple exercise forms are used like: playing an instrument (together) or singing, existing compositions or improvising, listening to music, writing your own song and/or perform it (have it performed), recording your own music, doing sound experiments. To profit from music therapy it is not necessary to be able to play an instrument or be able to read from music notation.

Goals in music therapy could be: obtaining a positive body image, relaxation, getting in touch with emotions, dealing with emotions and recovering from trauma, getting a more firm grip on daily life situations by practising these in music, getting to know yourself, gaining self confidence. Goals will be tuned to individual problems.

Individual as well as group therapy is possible. Furthermore we offer family therapy and partner therapy (when a family member or partner suffers from an eating disorder).

Treatment and atmosphere

At Tiponi the human being behind the eating disorder is treated, we are working with the positive aspect, strong qualities and that which does go well. In order to best serve each individual, after the initial short period of getting acquainted, a personal treatment plan is drawn up and discussed. Asking for help is not so easy, and it is very important to us that each person feels comfortable. Tiponi wants to offer a warm and safe environment where honesty and sincere concern and caring are first priority. We are careful, thorough and respectful in dealing with personal feelings and information.
